Stefon Diggs is 32 years old, fresh of offseason ACL surgery, still facing the occasional double-team, and the owner of seven 1,000 yard seasons in the NFL.
His girlfriend, grammy-winning artist Cardi B, praised the Patriots’ receiver for his hard work this season. She spoke with NFL Media’s Cameron Wolfe after the Patriots beat the Broncos in the AFC championship game.
One word in particular stood out in her comments.
“Discipline. Discipline and work,” she said. “It’s not like ‘oh, you wake up and you’re great’ it’s discipline, it’s going to bed early, it’s not missing one day of work, nothing. It’s discipline. Simple, hard, discipline.”
Diggs has played in all 20 of the Patriots’ games this season. He was ready to go for week one after having surgery. He led the team in receptions (85) and targets (102). He became the Patriots’ first 1,000 yard receiver since Julian Edelman.
Now, in his 11th NFL season, Diggs has the opportunity to play in the Super Bowl for the first time. Being on this team with a chance to bring a title home means “everything,” he said.
“I’m just so proud of this team, man,” Diggs said. “You don’t know how hard this year has been, bro, battling an injury and coming back. Being around a great group of guys, great quarterback, great OC, great head coach, great team. They made it all worth it. All the hard work.”
“I’m feeling very excited, very happy, and very proud of him,” Cardi B said. “He just came back from an ACL and we’ve seen the progress, the process of him going through there from the first time he started running back, and now joining the Patriots, going to the Super Bowl. I’m very excited for him and the whole team, they’ve been working their butts off.”
Diggs overcame his share of doubters after his season was cut short by the ACL injury last season.
“They was calling me washed [up],” Diggs said. “They said I ain’t have it no more, man. I tell everybody I just wanted to prove it to myself. I am who I say I am. E took a chance on me, this team took a chance on me. I just wanted to make them proud. … Just thank you. I’m just thankful.”
Cardi B said she is enjoying this Patriots’ playoff run. It’s not a bad way to kick off her football fandom, she said.
“I’m a big baseball fan, you know I’m a Red Sox fan,” Cardi B said. “Everybody knows that I’m a Red Sox fan. It’s kind of cool that we’re keeping it in New England.”
