Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs’s legal matter will not affect his ability to play in the playoffs, according to new court documents.

Diggs, who was originally set to be arraigned at Dedham District Court on Friday, Jan. 23, for felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges, will now appear in court on Friday, Feb. 13, per a document obtained by 7News’ Steve Cooper.

“As grounds therefor, counsel for Mr. Diggs states that he has only recently been engaged in this matter and that he has a previously-scheduled professional commitment on January 23, 2026,” a Jan. 8 document signed by Diggs’s attorney, David E. Meier, reads.

With this postponement, if New England were to advance to the AFC Championship Game slated for Sunday, Jan. 25, Diggs would now be able to play without issue. Super Bowl LX will be played on Sunday, Feb. 8.

According to public court documents, Diggs is accused of hitting and choking a female private chef during a dispute over money on Dec. 2 in Dedham. The 32-year-old NFL veteran allegedly entered her unlocked bedroom after a text exchange about a payment and “smacked her across the face.” He then “tried to choke her using the crook of his elbow around her neck.”

The woman said she “…had trouble breathing and that she felt like she could have blacked out. She said that as she tried to pry his arm away, he tightened his grip. At that point the male threw her onto the bed. He said something to the effect of ‘Thought so.’”

Diggs declined to comment on the allegations against him when speaking with the media on Jan. 2. Instead, he apologized for having been away from the media for a couple of days.

Meier released a statement addressing the accusations against Diggs last month, stating that the claims are unsubstantiated.

“They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated — because they did not occur,” Meier wrote. “The timing and motivation for making the allegations is crystal clear: They are the direct result of an employee-employer financial dispute that was not resolved to the employee’s satisfaction. Stefon looks forward to establishing the truth in a court of law.”

The Patriots also released a statement on Dec. 30 declaring their support for Diggs.

“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs,” the organization said. “Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”
