Before the 2026 Oscars on March 15, you can catch up on almost all of the 2025 movies nominated for Academy Awards, whether in theaters or on your favorite streaming platform.
The nominations for the 2026 Oscars were announced Thursday morning, which means you have a little bit less than two months to catch up on all of the best movies of 2025 before the March 15 ceremony, hosted by funnyman Conan O’Brien.
Ryan Coogler’s genre-spanning vampire epic “Sinners” landed a record 16 Oscar nominations, closely followed by Paul Thomas Anderson’s revolutionary saga “One Battle After Another,” with 13.
Both films have been available streaming on HBO Max for months now, something that has become more common in recent years thanks to the proliferation of streaming services and the shorter theatrical windows.
That said, there are still a number of Oscar nominees, including several Best Picture contenders like “Hamnet” and “Marty Supreme,” that can only be seen in theaters at the moment.

Note: A few nominees for Best Animated Short, Best Live Action Short, and Best Documentary Short are not listed because they are not currently available in theaters, on streaming, or to rent for American audiences.

How to Watch the 2026 Best Picture Nominees
“Bugonia”

When director Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Favourite,” “Poor Things”) and Emma Stone work together, Oscar nominations usually follow. In this black comedy, Stone’s high-powered CEO is kidnapped by a conspiracy theorist (Jesse Plemons) and his sidekick (Aidan Delbis) who are 100% convinced she is an alien draining their life force. Stone may (or may not) be from another planet, but the impact her company has had on the duo’s small town and the people who inhabit it can only be described as ruinous.

“F1”

The most surprising Best Picture nominee of the year is Brad Pitt’s racing drama, in which the aging actor (now 62 years old!) plays a Formula 1 driver pulled out of retirement to mentor an unfocused rising talent (Damson Idris). While it has no realistic chance of taking home the top award, the nomination alone is a testament to the fact that “F1” was probably the most fun you could have at a theater in 2025, thanks to its immersive driving footage, teeth-rattling sound, and the interplay between Pitt and basically everyone else in the film.

“Frankenstein”

Fittingly, director Guillermo del Toro spent decades trying to bring his version of Mary Shelley’s novel to life before finally succeeding in 2025. The filmmaker has always loved monsters, so it’s no wonder that the creation (Jacob Elordi) is given equal screen time (and greater sympathy) than its maker, Victor (Oscar Isaac).

“Hamnet”

Before you rush off to Wikipedia to confirm, any evidence that William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” was inspired by the death of his son, Hamnet, is speculative. While the film may be a fictionalized account, the painful story of Anne (Jessie Buckley) and William’s (Paul Mescal) personal tragedy feels very real.

“Marty Supreme”

Josh Safdie, half of the sibling directing duo that made “Uncut Gems,” brings us another adrenaline-fueled story set on the streets of New York City about a pure narcissist in over his head. Instead of Adam Sandler’s Howard Ratner feeding a bottomless gambling addiction by running two-bit schemes and screwing over anyone foolish enough to enter his orbit, Marty Mauser (Timothee Chalamet, in an Oscar-worthy performance) does the same thing (this time in a post-WWII NYC) to fulfill his destiny as the world’s greatest ping-pong champion. Marty’s motives couldn’t be more transparent, but you understand why people (including a never-better Gwyneth Paltrow) keep falling for him.

“One Battle After Another”

From the very first frame of Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” it is obvious that you are witnessing a current and future masterpiece. It’s the director’s most purely entertaining film to date, an alchemic mix of political intrigue, thrilling action, and giddy comedy, all undergirded by some of the most technically spectacular filmmaking in recent memory. As “Bob,” a weed-smoking, bathrobe-wearing paranoiac trying to hide from his anarchist past, Leonardo DiCaprio has rarely been better. As the cartoonish manifestation of Bob’s fear, Sean Penn turns in a villain performance for the ages.

“The Secret Agent”

Set in 1977 Brazil, “The Secret Agent” follows a researcher (Wagner Moura) who is trying to escape death by fleeing his home and reuniting with his son. The film’s description may sound glum, but director Kleber Mendonça Filho makes living under authoritarianism fun — or at least as fun as it can be. In the title role, Moura effortlessly channels movie-star suaveness while never losing sight of the constant anxiety bubbling just below the surface.

“Sentimental Value”

“Sentimental Value” contains a novel’s worth of multi-generational family history in a single film, telling the story of a Norwegian film director father (Stellan Skarsgård) who reunites with his two estranged daughters (Renate Reinsve, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) upon the death of his ex-wife. Skarsgard’s filmmaker is ready to direct a semi-autobiographical swan song, but when his daughter understandably refuses the lead role, he casts an eager American (Elle Fanning) instead.

“Train Dreams”

Based on Denis Johnson’s novella of the same name, “Train Dreams” follows a laborer (Joel Edgerton) in the early 20th century who spends long stretches away from his home in the Pacific Northwest, whether working as a logger or helping build a railroad that will connect across America. Set a century before our present day, the story of an American worker grappling with a rapidly changing world, trying to make a good life for his wife and daughter, is as evergreen as the trees that fill the landscape — until (slight spoiler alert) they don’t.
