If you’re looking for an ocean breeze, the former home of Maine Gov. Ken Curtis is likely right up your alley.
Located at 1 Bay Road in South Portland, the three-bed, six-bath (four full, two half) home built in 1951 out of granite stones from Deer Isle is currently on the market for $3.95 million. It was designed by John Howard Stevens, the son of architect John Calvin Stevens, who was known for creating some of the prominent churches, libraries, and homes in the Portland area.

“This house is 75 years old, and it looks like it was built yesterday,” said Sam Michaud of Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty, who has the listing. He noted the home underwent a full renovation when the current owner purchased it in 2013.
The home previously belonged to Gov. Curtis, who served in the role from 1967 to 1975. The home’s oceanfront setting was so tempting that President Jimmy Carter, a friend and political ally, reportedly stayed at the Curtis home multiple times and couldn’t resist scaling the seawall to soak up the ocean breeze during one visit.
“President Jimmy Carter visited Governor Curtis when he lived here. When the President jumped up on the sea wall to feel the wind, the Secret Service freaked out and pulled him off,” a realtor shared in a 2011 story in Portland Monthly Magazine.
Tucked in the Casco Bay, the house boasts a smooth, contemporary layout that allows views of the water from almost every single room. On any given day, you’ll spot everything from lobster boats to sailboats cascading by. Hardwood floors stream throughout the space, which flows naturally thanks to an open floor plan. In the kitchen, top-of-the-line appliances complement the stone countertops that feature pieces of seaglass that continue into the backsplash above the stove. Ample cabinetry provides storage as does a walk-in pantry. A sitting area off the kitchen features oversized windows and a gas fireplace.

You’ll find the first-floor primary bedroom suite right off the kitchen. Massive hurricane windows boast views of the water.
“The second you open your eyes, you’re staring at the Atlantic,” said Michaud.
The primary bedroom features his-and-hers bathrooms with walk-in showers, as well as a spacious walk-in closet and dressing area with a laundry area.

Continue down to the lower level of the home, where you’ll find the two remaining bedrooms, as well as a room that’s currently home to a pool table that could be converted into a fourth bedroom. A kitchenette area is ideal for entertaining, especially thanks to the double doors that open out to the sprawling stone terrace overlooking the waves crashing onto the beach. Perfect for hosting guests, the terrace has previously welcomed as many as 100 guests for events in the space, which features a fire pit and a built-in grill.

A drive-through garage allows two sides for entry onto the stone driveway. It’s less than a 10-minute drive to downtown Portland.
The home features baseboard radiant heat and central air.
