Authorities released a new video showing the Brown University shooter fleeing campus moments after killing two students who were attending a study session late last month.

Claudio Neves Valente, who went on to lead law enforcement on a six-day manhunt, was recorded on a university shuttle vehicle’s dash camera near the Barus & Holley engineering and physics building.

Moments earlier, Neves Valente allegedly fired more than 40 rounds from a 9 mm handgun in a classroom inside the Barus & Holley building Dec. 13. Sophomore Ella Cook and first-year student MukhammadAziz Umurzokov were killed, and nine others were injured.

In the video obtained by The Boston Globe from the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office, Neves Valente is seen walking across a parking lot to enter a residential neighborhood, away from campus. As Neves Valente briskly crosses the street and turns left, the shuttle bus turns right, revealing police cruisers with their lights on.

Neves Valente evaded capture until he was found dead Dec. 18 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a Salem, New Hampshire storage unit. An anonymous Reddit poster known publicly only as John identified Neves Valente’s vehicle, leading authorities to Salem.

After leaving Providence, authorities say, Neves Valente drove to Brookline, where he shot and killed MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro. Then, in Salem, Neves Valente recorded four videos, saying in Portuguese that he did not regret his actions, according to translated transcripts released by federal officials. Neves Valente was a Portuguese national with legal permanent residency in the U.S.

Neves Valente was enrolled in a physics PhD program at Brown from the fall of 2000 until taking a leave of absence in April of 2001, Brown University President Christina Paxson said previously. He formally withdrew from the university in 2003, she told reporters.

“I think it’s safe to assume that this man, when he was a student, spent a great deal of time in (the Barus & Holley building) for classes and other activities as a PhD student in physics,” Paxson said when he was found dead.

The Rhode Island Attorney General did not return a request for comment about the newly released video.
