The woman and another pedestrian were walking on the side of the highway because the sidewalk was covered in snow, the DA’s office said.
A woman died Sunday night after she was struck by a vehicle on a Wareham highway, the local district attorney announced.
Around 8:40 p.m., Wareham police received a call from a passenger of a Volvo saying that the vehicle had just hit two pedestrians, the office of Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz said in a press release.
Police found an injured man and woman at the scene. Both were transported to a local hospital, where the woman, 57, died from her injuries, Cruz’s office said.
The driver and passenger of the Volvo remained at the scene and told police that, while traveling southbound, they came around a bend and saw two people walking in the roadway, the DA said.
Both told police that the driver was not distracted or speeding and hitting the pedestrians was unavoidable due to oncoming traffic in the next lane, Cruz’s office said.
The surviving pedestrian told police that he and the woman, who was using a walker, were walking along the fog line of the highway due to snow covering the sidewalk, the DA said.
The pedestrian said the pair was first hit by a black truck’s passenger mirror, knocking them both down. The woman then moved towards the roadway, where she was struck by the Volvo, the DA said.
The black truck had turned around into the northbound lane right before the fatal crash, said Cruz.
The surviving passenger does not know if he was hit by the Volvo or the woman as she was struck, the DA said.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, and police are withholding the woman’s name as they work to notify her family, Cruz’s office said.
