Deep in the bucolic Litchfield County section of Connecticut, you’ll find the small town of Salisbury. It’s a picturesque hideaway just a couple miles from the Massachusetts border that’s home to the Taconic School House, now on the market for $1.995 million.
Sitting on a rolling 2.92-acre property, 552 Twin Lakes Road is a three-bed, four-bath home that was built in 1890 with a limestone foundation and was later added onto. From the school bell that hangs over the entrance to the sign that reads “hear instruction and be wise,” the property’s history as a place of education is clear. However, not too much seems to be known about its past. The current owners, who purchased the home 32 years ago, seem to be rather in the dark about its background as well.
“They fell in love with the charm, not necessarily the history,” said Graham Klemm, President and Broker of Klemm Real Estate, who has the listing.

Step inside the home to the massive main living room, where high ceilings and wood-paneled walls convey its deep historic nature. Walls of double-height windows on both sides allow natural light to stream in, while the oversized working fireplace anchors the space in the center.
Continue through a paneled wood door to the second main room, an oversized red space that continues the sense of grandeur with walls of built-in bookshelves and massive windows.

Move into an addition to the home to find the kitchen, which features stainless steel appliances. That extends into a dining area, as well as a pass-through bar area painted a bright red color.

A lower level features a spacious family room with two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. That leads directly out to the gunite swimming pool, which is next to a stone patio that’s ideal for lounging.
“You can hang out down there and go in and out and pop in the pool and come back inside,” said Klemm.

Back near the home’s entrance, a staircase leads up to the second story, where you’ll find three bedrooms that Klemm compares to Parisian hotel rooms, thanks to their beamed ceilings and smaller square footage.
There is a separate two-car garage on the property. There is also a whole-house generator.
The home is located right in the Twin Lakes area, which is ideal for boating. It’s also just a 10-minute drive from the charming town center of Salisbury. It’s also just a short drive away from Mount Washington and the town of Great Barrington.
