Thousands of U.S. flights scheduled for the weekend were canceled as a massive storm began battering large swaths of the country on Saturday, cutting power and turning major highways treacherous with ice, while heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain threatened nearly 180 million people – more than half the population – along a corridor from the southern Rocky Mountains to New England, prompting the National Weather Service to warn of several days of bitter cold and caution that the slow-melting snow and ice would significantly hamper recovery efforts.
