Cary Guy of Dighton pleaded no contest to charges of driving the wrong way on I-195 in East Providence while drunk, seriously injuring four people.
A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to a decade in state prison for driving drunk and causing a wrong-way crash on Interstate 195 in East Providence that seriously injured four people, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced.
A judge on Thursday sentenced Cary Guy, 33, of Dighton, to 10 years in a house of correction and seven years of probation. As part of the sentence, Guy must also undergo alcohol counseling and treatment and will lose his driver’s license for six years following his release.
Guy previously pleaded no contest to four counts of driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury, four counts of driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury, and two counts of driving to endanger resulting in physical injury, according to the attorney general’s office.
Prosecutors said Guy drove the wrong way on Interstate 195 East around 7:30 p.m. on May 24, 2022, colliding head-on with multiple vehicles and sending six people to the hospital. Four of the victims suffered serious injuries.
First responders transported Guy to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. While at the hospital, investigators tried to conduct a field sobriety test and requested a chemical blood test, which Guy refused. Police obtained a search warrant to test his blood, and found that Guy’s blood alcohol content was .109, according to officials. In Rhode Island, the legal limit is 0.08.
A crash reconstruction determined Guy was traveling approximately 88 miles per hour just before the collision, investigators said.
Five victims were taken to Rhode Island Hospital, while a sixth was transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River.
“Driving under the influence is a crime that is as reckless as it is entirely avoidable,” Neronha said in a statement. “When this defendant drove drunk, he endangered the lives of everyone on the road that evening, including the six victims that he sent to the hospital for serious injuries. There is no excuse for this type of behavior, and my office will continue to hold accountable those who threaten the lives of others by driving impaired.”
