He was charged with one count of transmitting interstate threats to injure another person in April 2025.
A South Dennis man was sentenced on Wednesday after threatening to murder a federal official and their family in March 2025, federal prosecutors said.
Michael Mahoney, 64, was sentenced to two years of supervised release with three months of house arrest and must pay a $5000 fine, the office of the U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, Leah Foley, said in a press release.
On March 28, 2025, a relative of the unnamed federal official received a “no caller ID” phone call from a man who stated he was Mahoney, Foley’s office said.
During the call, Mahoney allegedly referenced the relative by their first name and began to scream expletives into the phone, claiming he was going to murder the relative and the relative’s spouse, as well as the official, an FBI agent wrote in an affidavit filed in court.
The relative hung up, and Mahoney called back again, but the relative did not answer. The initial call lasted 12 seconds, according to the affidavit.
Call records show the phone number from both calls belonged to Mahoney, said the affidavit.
Mahoney was arrested in April of 2025. He was charged with one count of transmitting interstate threats to injure another person, the U.S. Attorney said.
